Do you know what one of the most important factors to become a real legitimate artist is?

Investing in yourself.

I know, I know, you’ve probably heard that a million times, inspirational memes, etc.

But this is one of the KEYS.

dj khaled another one meme

And one of the first ways you NEED to start with is, investing in your DEFENSEEEEE.

Legal defense that is.

I don’t mean lawyers, no.

I mean with licenses.

Licenses are basically legal handshakes that can save you hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars in legal damages.

This means everything from music software, to stock photos, to fonts, to beats and more need to be backed by legal agreements or not you can find yourself in a pretty sticky (legal) situation.

Obviously this post is about beats, so let’s save that other stuff for another post.

So why do we see free beats all over the internet, when they’re not really free?

It’s just marketing, it’s a way to get people’s attention, that’s it.

There’s usually fine print involved somewhere, if you keep reading.

The catch is “free for personal use” or “free for non-profit use”

For veteran artists it’s common knowledge that “free beat” doesn’t mean free beat, and it’s more like a free trial.

The free beat just makes it easy for the artist to write to and record their ideas to.

The unspoken law between producers and artists goes like this.

  1. Producer posts beat “for free download”.
  2. Artist downloads beat, and makes fire song.
  3. Artist wants to get song mixed and legally ready for release.
  4. Producer sells license for legal release, and tracked out files of beat for mixing.
  5. Artist invests in a license + tracked out files.
  6. Artist has a clean fire song, no legal worries on release day, and Artist can monetize their own song.
  7. Artist wins. Producer wins.

So what happens if you decide you want to do things your own way and use the free beats?

Let’s take a look, shall we:

  1. You will get laughed at, most people know that if you are using a tagged beat, that you are a struggle rapper/singer, etc.
  2. Your song will be monetized on most platforms by the Producer.
  3. You may receive a cease and desist letter from a lawyer.
  4. You may receive a lawsuit from a lawyer.
  5. You can lose all potential profits as a result.

So most part time rappers choose to go the free route….which is cool, if your not doing much with your career

Butt

if you are an artist who is moving over to the certified legit side of the business,

then make sure your ducks are in a row, before you release your song.

A real estate investor gets insurance and deeds for their assets (properties).
Real recording artists get licenses for their assets (songs)
